West Point, Miss. - East Carolina fired a season-low round of 289 (1-over) during first round play at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational and currently sits in second place. The three-day, 54-hole event is being held at the Old Waverly Golf Club, home of the 1999 U.S. Women's Open.
The Pirates (20-6) are nine shots back of host institution Mississippi State, who carded an impressive 7-under 281. Georgia State (5-over/293) is four shots behind ECU in third, while Florida International (6-over/294) and South Alabama (9-over/297) round out the top five.
Sophomore Nicoline Engstroem Skaug leads ECU after her opening round of 2-under par 70 (35-35), which consisted of four birdies including three in a row on holes 8-10 and sits in sole possession of third. Junior Katie Kirk is one-shot back after posting a 1-under 71 (37-34) sitting in a four-way tie for fourth place.
Sitting atop the individual leaderboard is Mississippi State's Ally McDonald after her opening round 67 (5-under) and holds a two shot lead over teammate Jessica Peng (3-under/69). USF's Nicole Autrique, FIU's Shelby Coyle and Georgia State's Lauren Court join Kirk in a tie for fourth.
Second round gets under way at 9:30 a.m. (ET) with the Pirates teeing off at 10:25 a.m. Pirate fans can follow all the live action online.
