Eng Tied For 12th At Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Emily Eng carded a 1-over par 73 and currently sits in a 10-way tie for 12th place after 18 holes at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate. The three-day event is being held at the par-72, 6,447-yard Holston Hills Country Club.
Eng leads the Pirates (36-12) squad after posting a 3-over front nine 39 and a 2-under 34 back and is four shots off the tournament leader. Freshman Nicoline Engstroem Skaug is tied for 31st after an opening round 3-over par 75 (38-37), while fellow classmate Frida Gustafsson Spang is tied for 43rd at 4-over (35-41=76). Sophomore Katie Kirk is two shots back of Gustafsson Spang at 6-over (38-40) in a tie for 55th, while freshman Lane Gakeler was disqualified during Friday's round for a scorecard infraction due to an unsigned card. The Greensboro, N.C. native will be able to participate in the final two rounds with her score counting towards the team's overall total.
Penn State and Texas A&M lead the field after the first round shooting 3-over par 291. UTSA is in a tie with Tennessee for third at 4-over, while Purdue sits in fifth at 5-over 293. The Pirates are in 11th after an opening round 14-over 302.
In the individual scoreboard, Northwestern's Hana Lee fired a 3-under par 69 in the first round to pace the competition. Texas A&M's Sarah Beth Davis and Furman's Laura Wearn are in a tie for second with Popson at 2-under 70. Ellen Ceresko (Penn State), Mary Michael Maggio (Texas A&M) and Paula Reto (Purdue) are tied up in fifth at 1-under par 71, while Ally McDonald (Mississippi State), Jessica Negron (Florida State), Taylor Nevin (UTSA) and Paola Valerio (UTSA) are tied for 10th at even par.
Second round action begins at 9:00 a.m. Saturday with the Pirates teeing off at 10:40 a.m.
