KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The East Carolina women's golf team posted a final round 309 (21-over) at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate finishing in 11th place out of 16 teams Sunday afternoon. The three-day, 54-hole event was being held at the par-72, 6,447-yard Holtston Hills Country Club.
Freshman Nicoline Engstroem Skaug was the Pirates' top finisher with an 8-over par 224 (75-76-73) claiming a share of 32nd place. Fellow classmate Frida Gustafsson Spang finished two strokes behind at 10-over (76-71-79=226), while sophomore Emily Eng was four shots behind Engstroem Skaug at 12-over (228). Sophomore Katie Kirk took a share of 66th after a three-day 236 (20-over) and freshman Lane Gakeler finished 90th after her opening round was disqualified due to a scoring infraction.
Penn State (3-over) took the team title after posting a final round 287 and finished four strokes ahead of host Tennessee (7-over/871). Purdue (8-over) finished third followed by Northwestern (10-over) and Texas A&M (12-over). The Pirates (41-22) finished 11th after a 50-over par 914 (302-303-309).
Purdue's Paula Reto earned medalist honors with a 211 (5-under) card. Furman's Laura Wearn was one stroke out at 4-under, while Texas A&M's Mary Michael Maggio earned third at 3-under.
ECU will close out the fall portion of its schedule in two weeks at the Alamo Invitational (Oct. 28-30) in San Antonio, Texas.
