Women's Golf In Third Place After First Round of Edwin Watts/Carolina's Classic
02/28/2003 PINEHURST, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's golf team is sitting in third place after the first round of the Edwin Watts/Carolina's Classic golf tournament in Pinehurst, N.C. The women finished the day at 311, just two strokes off the leader, Jacksonville State which finished the day at 309. The tournament is bring played at the par-72, 5,898-yard Pinehurst #8 golf course. Jessica Krasny leads the field of 112 golfers, finishing one stroke over par at 73 on the day. She shot 39 on the front nine and 34 on the back. East Carolina's Heidi Helliesen and Jamie Quinn are both tied for 12th place with scores of 78 after round one. Helliesen shot 39 on both the front and back nine, while Quinn shot 40 on the front nine, and 38 on the back. "I was really pleased with the way we played today," said ECU head golf coach Kevin Williams. "The golf course played really tough today, but I thought Jessica (Krasny) had a wonderful round. Hopefully we will get a little better each day this weekend and put ourselves in a position to win on Sunday." Jacksonville State leads all teams with a score of 309. UAB sits in second place, East Carolina in third, and UNCW in fourth. There are 22 teams participating in the tournament. The second round of the tournament will begin tomorrow morning with a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m.
