GULF SHORES, Ala. - Thirteen women's golf teams, three ranked among the Top 45 nationally, are set to tee off Monday as the 2014 Conference USA Women's Golf Championship gets underway at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club in Gulf Shores, Ala.
The championship consists of 54 holes on a par 72, 6,145-yard course spanning three days, with the winning team receiving an automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals. This is the fourth-straight year that the tournament has been hosted at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club.
With seeding based on the current Golfstat team rankings, it was determined that FIU, Middle Tennessee and Old Dominion would begin Monday on the first hole at 8:50 a.m. FIU and Middle Tennessee are making their C-USA Championship debuts, while Old Dominion hopes to improve on its seventh-place finish a year ago in its inaugural appearance.
Tulane, East Carolina and UTSA - the top-three seeds at this year's championship - will tee off from the first hole beginning at 9:40 a.m. (ET). Defending champion Tulane enters the championship ranked 29th in the nation by . The Green Wave boasts four student-athletes who finished among the top eight in the 2013 Championship.
East Carolina currently is ranked No. 43 by Golfweek and is coming off a runner-up finish a year ago. The Pirates return 2013 individual medalist Nico Engstroem Skaug, who won a playoff to claim the honor. Skaug and Tulane's Gemma Dryburgh finished the 54 holes with 220 scores and will tee off together at 10:10 a.m. with UTSA senior Taylor Newlin. The Roadrunners, ranked No. 45 by Golfweek, are making their first appearance in this year's championship.
UAB and Florida Atlantic will open the day as the twosomes will tee off from No. 10 at 8:30 a.m. (ET). Marshall and UTEP will also play in pairs beginning at 9:20 a.m. off No. 10.
Tulsa, North Texas and Southern Miss will tee off from No. 10 at 10:10 a.m. as seeds 7-10. Tulsa is looking to improve upon its fourth-place finish a year ago. The Golden Hurricane won the 2012 Championship at Gulf Shores, and also claimed the 2008 title. North Texas is making its first C-USA appearance, while the charter member Golden Eagles have participated in all 18 previous championships.
