Millican To Participate In 90th Women's Southern Amateur Golf Tournament
06/04/2005 Former Lady Pirate golfer Adrienne Millican is one of 128 golfers invited to participate in the 90th Women's Southern Amateur Tournament in Savannah, Georgia on June 13. Millican concluded her four-year career with the Pirates this season after guiding ECU to its second NCAA Tournament appearance in the past three seasons. She earned first-team All-Conference USA accolades for the second consecutive season and was named to C-USA's 10th Anniversary Team. As a junior, she became the first Pirate golfer, male or female in the modern era to participate in the NCAA Championships, finishing tied for 34th out of 126 golfers. The annual tournament will be held at The Landings Club, Savannah Georgia with its most competitive field ever. Taffy Brower, Boynton Beach, Florida, who in 2004 became the first woman to win both the Southern Amateur and Southern Senior Amateur in the same year, returns to defend her title. Four current or former USGA national champions, Carolyn Creekmore, Dallas, Texas (2004 Women's Senior), Virginia Derby Grimes, Meridian, Mississippi (1998 Women's Mid-Am), Martha Lang, Mandeville, Louisiana (1988 Women's Mid-Am) and Nancy Fitzgerald, Bonita Springs, Florida (1997 Women's Senior Amateur) will join the field of 128 golfers. Laura Coble, seven time Georgia Golfer of the Year hopes to be the first Georgian to win this tournament since Martha Kirouac in 1990. The Deer Creek Course at the Landings Club will be set at approximately 5950 yards. The field also includes top collegiate golfers from all over the fourteen southern states including: Laura Crawford (Wake Forest), Garrett Phillips (Augusta State), Lorraine Ballerano (North Carolina State), Adrienne Millican (East Carolina), Lindsey Bergeon (Florida Southern), RemiJin Camping (Barry), Stephanie Godare (Mississippi State), Caitlin Ogren (Birmingham Southern), Lara McCaslin (South Carolina), Charlotte Campbell (Rollins), Julie Barthlomew (Vanderbilt), Alexis Rather (Louisiana State), Jessica Lovell (Auburn), Kelly Calkin and Katie Trotter (Maryland) and Tarah McNaughton (Florida). Featured speaker at the tournament banquet is Martha Kirouac, Norcross Georgia, 1970 USGA Women's Amateur Champion, 1990 Southern Amateur Champion and two-time Curtis Cup player and captain of the victorious 2004 US Curtis Cup team. Local Savannah resident Ceil Maclaurin, USGA Senior Women's Champion in 1976 and former Women's Southern Amateur and Senior Amateur Champion will be a special guest at the banquet.
