Millican Advances To Round Of 16 At The Women's Southern Golf Tournament
06/15/2005 Savannah, GA – Former East Carolina women's golf standout Adrienne Millican (Fuquay-Varina, NC), jumped out to an early three up lead and held on to defeat Julie Harrison 4 and 3 to advance to the round of 16 Wednesday. The tournament is being played at the par-72, 5,950-yard Dear Creek Course at Landings Club in Savannah, Georgia. The Championship Division of the 90th Women's Southern Golf Association started with thirty-two players, a majority of which were junior or collegiate golfers. The remainder of the division was stacked with veteran match play players. On Tuesday, youth trumped experience as eleven of the sixteen players who advanced to the next round were juniors and collegians. Jessica Lovell (Auburn) strung together seven birdies to eliminate Lea Anne Brown. Lindsey Bergeon (Florida Southern) made four birdies to defeat Penn State's Betsy Houseman, 6 and 5. Lorraine Ballerano (NC State) upset two-time Southern champion, Martha Lang, 5 and 4. In other action, Laura McCaslin (South Carolina) knocked off co-medalist Karen Ferree (Hilton Head, S.C.), while Charlotte Campbell came from behind to defeat Floridian Therese Quinn. Mississippi State golfer Stephanie Godare defeated junior player Jillian Brodd and Louisiana State's Alexis Rather defeated Florida University player, Tarah McNaughton. Co-Medalist Laura Crawford, Wake Forest defeated Vanderbilt's Julie Bartholomew. The experience of 1998 USGA Mid-Am Champion Virginia Derby Grimes helped her to defeat Augusta State's Garrett Phillips 6 and 5. Beth Williams defeated Kie McNabb 3 and 1, and seven-time Georgia Player of the Year Laura Coble over powered Caitlin Ogren of Birmingham Southern, 4 and 3.
