Millican Eliminated In Round Of 16 At Women's Southern Amateur
06/17/2005 Savannah, GA – Former East Carolina women's golf standout Adrienne Millican (Fuquay-Varina, NC), fell to Jessica Lovell (Auburn) 2 and 1 in the Championship Division round of 16 on Wednesday. The tournament is being played at the par-72, 5,950-yard Dear Creek Course at Landings Club in Savannah, Georgia. Laura Coble, the Player of the Year in Georgia for the past seven years survived the heat of the Savannah summer and the torrid putting of Lindsey Bergeon to reach the finals of the 90th Women's Southern Amateur Golf Tournament. Bergeron sank three long putts to keep the match going but could not match Coble's five foot putt for birdie on the 16th hole to lose 3 and 2. The last Georgia champion of the Women's Southern was Martha Kirouac in 1990 which coincidentally was that last time the tournament was held in Georgia. In the other semi-final match junior medalist RemiJen Camping of Hollywood, Florida outlasted Louisiana State freshman Alexis Rather 2 and 1. Camping who was the NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year at Barry University in Florida used steady iron play and solid putting to win. In the quarter-finals, Laura Coble held off North Carolina State's Lorraine Ballerano to reach the semi-finals of the 90th Women's Southern Amateur Golf Championship being held at the Deer Creek Course at the Landings Club in Savannah, Georgia. Joining Coble in the semi-finals are Louisiana State University's Alexis Rather from Tupelo, Mississippi, Florida Southern University's Lindsey Bergeon of Sarasota, Florida and junior golfer RemiJin Camping of Hollywood, Florida who plays for Barry University in Florida. Camping overcame some early putting jitters to upset 1998 USGA Mid-Am champions and twice winner of this tournament, Virginia Derby Grimes 2 up. Rather caught fire on the back nine to close out South Carolina University's Laura McCaslin from Cookeville, Tennessee 4 and 3. Bergeon's steady play eliminated Jessica Lovell of Auburn 1-up. The 36-hole match-play championship between Cole and Camping will begin Friday morning at 8 a.m.
