Aug 30, 2013
New York, N.Y. - East Carolina sophomore Frida Gustafsson Spang has been named one of the Top-50 Female College Players To Watch for the 2013-14 season according to Golf World's Senior Writer and Campus Insider Ryan Herrington. Spang is joined on the list by fellow Conference USA golfer Emily Penttila of Tulane.
Spang, who posted a single-season record 73.50 stroke average a year ago, became the second Pirate to earn C-USA Player-of-the-Year honors joining Abby Bools (2008, 2010). She was the fourth ECU player to claim the conference's Freshman-of-the-Year award, adding her name to a list that includes Lene Krog (2006), Amber Littman (2008) and Fanny Wolte (2011).
The Kinna, Sweden native tied for the C-USA lead with two individual titles during the 2012-13 season winning the UNCG Starmount Forest Tournament, where she shot a school record 7-under par 206, and at the JMU Eagle Landing with a 4-under 212. She became the sixth player in school history to claim multiple titles in the same season and first since Wolte during her freshman campaign (2010-11). In all, she was a top-10 finisher at six events, including a sixth-place effort at the C-USA Championship.
Spang and the Pirates open the 2013-14 season on Friday, Sept. 9 when they travel to College Station, Texas to participate in The MOmorial, which will be held at the Traditions Golf Club.
