Frida Gustafsson Spang named C-USA Co-Golfer-of-the-Week

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina freshman Frida Gustafsson Spang was named Conference USA Co-Golfer-of-the-Week after claiming medalist honors at the 2012 UNCG Starmount Forest Tournament the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
The Kinna, Sweden native won her first collegiate tournament with a school-record 7-under par 206 and helped No. 20 ECU (24-5) to a third place finish, its second top-five team placement of the young season.
Gustafsson Spang, who played as the Pirates' No. 1 golfer, led wire-to-wire carding an opening round 66 (4-under/ 33-33) posting the second-lowest 18-hole score in school history. She followed that with a one-under 70 (35-35) to close out Monday and then posted another one-under 70 (35-35) to win the event by six strokes.
During the first day of the event (36 holes), she recorded 10 birdies, an eagle and 19 pars. Gustafsson Spang led all golfers in par-4 scoring (4-under), par-5 scoring (6-under) and birdies (13). She became the ninth golfer in school history to claim medalist honors and did so in just her second collegiate event.
Gustafsson Spang and the Pirates will be back in action on Monday, Oct. 8 when they play host to the 2012 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, which will be held at the Greenville Country Club.
