Women's Golf Takes Home Fourth Place Finish
10/06/2002 STATE COLLEGE, PA. – The East Carolina University women's golf team took home a fourth place finish in the Nittany Lion Invitational hosted by Penn State University. The three-round two-day tournament, which included 15 teams, took place at the 72-par Penn State Blue Course. Penn State took the team crown on Sunday with a final three-round score of 902, finishing nine strokes ahead of the second place finisher Rollins College. East Carolina wrapped up the tournament with a final round score of 305, whaich was the Pirates' best showing in all three rounds. East Carolina completed the tournament with a three-round score of 922. Freshman Heidi Hellieson had the best finish individually for the Pirates. She came in sixth place with a final score of 227 (74-77-76). The individual title went to Penn State's Katie Futcher. "I was a bit disappointed in our finish," said Head Coach Kevin Williams. "I really thought we had a chance to come back and win. However, I was very excited about the way our freshman played. We really needed someone to step up for us, and the freshman took on that responsibility in this tournament, which was really big for us. It says a lot about the depth of this program, and I think we can except great things from these athletes in the years to come." East Carolina will host the Lady Pirate Fall Intercollegiate on October 14-15. That tournament will take place at the Greenville Country Club. Top Team Finishes Top Individual Finishes
