GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's golf team is set to host the 2012 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C. on Oct. 8-9 at the par-72, 6,004-yard Greenville Country Club.
The Pirates, who have finished in the top-three of the event the last four years, are joined in the 20-team field by No. 80 Augusta State, Boston College, Brown, No. 33 Coastal Carolina, Elon, Georgia State, High Point, Longwood, Marshall, No. 74 Maryland, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, No. 81 Old Dominion, Radford, Samford, Southern Miss, Western Carolina, William & Mary and Yale.
Three of the top-five performers from last year's event are back including 2011 medalist Samantha Morrell from Old Dominion along with Laverry Kumar (UNC Wilmington) and Juliet Vongphoumy (Maryland), both of whom tied for second place. Also returning is the 2010 overall individual champion Christine Shimel, who helped the Terrapins to the team title the last two seasons.
Since the event began in 2000, the Pirates have claimed three titles (2000-02), finished second four times (2003, 2008-10) and third twice (2004, 2011).
ECU's Emily Eng and Frida Gustafsson Spang will begin play on the first hole, while Katie Kirk will start from the second tee, Fanny Wolte on the third hole and Nicoline Engstroem Skaug on the fourth tee. Sophomore Devan Murphy and true freshman Lane Gakeler will start from the 18th hole.
The two-day 54-hole event will have 36-holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday with a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. on both days. Pirate fans can catch all the live action by logging onto www.Golfstat.com or www.ECUPirates.com.
