SMU Tops ECU On The Pitch, 1-0

CARY, N.C. - Amanda Burgardt scored in the 24th minute of play to give SMU a 1-0 win over East Carolina Friday afternoon at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The game was moved to Cary due to heavy rains in the Eastern North Carolina area.
With the win, the Mustangs pick up their first win league play and improve to 6-4-2 overall, while the Pirates drop to 6-5-0 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
Burgardt scored from 12 yards out placing a shot just over Christiane Cordero's head for the games only goal, which came in the first half. Kristin Medeiros sent a cross pass into the box to Burgardt fired a shot just out of the reach of Cordero, who logged five saves in 90 minutes of action.
Despite outshooting the Mustangs, 15-9 (9-6 on goal), the Pirates had plenty of chances for the equalizer. In the second period, Chrissy Gratz fired a shot five yards out, which was blocked by keeper Courtney Smith, then headed the rebound back towards the goal, which was stopped by one of the SMU defenders. In all, the Pirates took seven shots with five on goal in the final 45 minutes of action.
The Pirates were busy as well in the first half posting seven shots on goal, all of which were stopped by Smith, who ended up with 10 saves on the afternoon.
Kimmy Cummings led both teams with four shots (two on goal), while Amanda Malkiewicz had three (two on goal) to go along with Gratz' pair. Bugardt posted three shots to lead SMU, while Logan May added two on goal.
SMU edged ECU on corner kicks 7-5.
The Pirates will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 3 when they host Tulsa in Cary with a 1 p.m. scheduled start time. The Riley's Army Walk, Field Day, and Jersey Auction that was originally slated for this game has been rescheduled for Friday, Oct. 22 at the North Campus Recreation Complex when ECU hosts UTEP at 7 p.m. (EST).
