Pirates Drop 2-0 Contest At UTEP
Oct. 18, 2009
EL PASO, Texas – Chelsea Winbush scored two goals within the first 22 minutes of play to lead UTEP to a 2-0 victory over the East Carolina soccer team Sunday afternoon at University Field. With the loss, the Pirates fall to 8-6-2 overall and 3-5-0 in Conference USA. The Miners improve to 12-4-0 and 6-2-0 in the league.
The loss is ECU’s first to UTEP, as the Pirates had won two of the previous three meetings and played to a 1-1 tie in El Paso in 2007. “We are playing hard,” head coach Rob Donnenwirth said.
“We have just made some mistakes that have hurt us and created goals for the other team. We need to get back to practice and get ready for UAB Friday.”
The Miners recorded three shots with one on goal, before Winbush scored her first goal of the game at 9:26. Tameka Sumter and Tess Hall were credited with assists on the play.
Winbush struck again at 21:14 when she controlled a loose ball and shot it past ECU junior goalkeeper Jen Kurowicki. Skye Schultz picked up an assist on the score.
UTEP had chances to increase its lead at 32:55 and 34:01 when Katie Dorman and Anoop Josan took shots on goal, but Kurowicki made both saves.
The Pirates registered only three shots in the first half, with just one on goal. The shot on goal was a header by sophomore Jessica Woodward at the 43:11 mark.
In the second period, East Carolina junior Tricia Tufts had the first shot on goal for either team when she fired at 56:03. Chandra Morden made the save for UTEP.
Junior Bailey Wilcox had another scoring chance for the Pirates when she took a shot on goal at 66:17, but was also turned aside by Morden.
East Carolina received a corner kick at 79:52 that Tufts took. Her pass found freshman Chrissy Gratz, but Gratz’ shot went wide.
The last Pirate opportunity came off another corner kick at 86:55. Freshman Hali Oughton took a shot, but was stopped by Morden.
Next weekend, ECU returns home for this season’s final games at Bunting Field. The Pirates face UAB at 3 p.m. Friday and Memphis at 1 p.m. Sunday for Senior Day.
