Oct. 22, 2010
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Leah Bagonis netted her first goal of the season and Christiane Cordero recorded nine saves as East Carolina shutout UTEP Friday night in Conference USA action at the North Campus Recreation complex. Friday's game was held in conjunction with the Second Annual Riley's Auction, which raised over $6,000 for the Riley's Army charity of Greenville.
The win improved the Pirates record to 9-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in league play, while the Miners drop to 10-7-0 and 3-6-0.
Bagonis put the Pirates on the board early in the first half scoring in the eighth minute of play on a put back to the bottom left of the goal. Stephanie Shaw laced a shot from 12 yards out and was denied by UTEP keeper Chandra Morden, but Bagonis was there for the rebound.
The Pirates, who were out shot 13-10 on the night, controlled the tempo in the first half but were only able to muster a pair of shots in the first 45 minutes. But the second half was a different story as ECU collected eight shots, five on goal.
Cordero picked up her second career shutout after logging nine saves in the box in 90 minutes and improved to 9-7-1 in goal. Morden collected four saves in the loss.
The trio of Katie Dorman, Tori Martyn and Tess Hall combined for six of UTEP's nine shots on goal and Hall led all players with four total shots.
ECU held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-4.
The Pirates will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 24 in their home finale against Colorado College, which has been designated as Senior Day with a 12 noon start scheduled.
