Lady Pirates Fall To SMU, 2-0, On Senior Day

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team dropped its final home match of the season Sunday afternoon falling to SMU 2-0 at Bunting field in front of a packed crowd on Senior Day. The Pirates (7-11-0, 3-5-0) had a prime opportunity to score first in the match when Meghan McCallion (Long Island, N.Y.) received a pass from Anastasia Nikas (Scottsdale, Ariz.) from midfield and went one-on-one with SMU's keeper Ashley Gunter. McCallion when near post with her shot, but Gunter was able to make a diving save to halt the Pirate attack. Amber Campbell (Frederick, Md.) kept the Mustangs (12-4-1, 6-1-0) scoreless in the first period where she recorded seven of her eight saves on the day. During the second half ECU came out attacking as they out shot SMU 6-4. But a pair of late goals would give SMU their sixth win in Conference USA. Carley Phillips netted the first goal of the match at the 79:51 mark after Kat Norris (Houston, Texas) was given a yellow card for a slide tackle in the goal box. Carley lined up for the penalty kick and placed the ball in the lower left portion of the goal to take a 1-0 lead. The Pirates fought back missing two opportunities to tie the game in the closing minutes. McCallion was able to get around Gunter two times deep on the left side of the field, but was unable to find an opened teammate with her cross pass ending the Pirates threat.
With 42 seconds remaining in the match, Olivia O'Rear recorded her second goal of the season off a cross from Kimberly Bailey for a 2-0 win. For Pirate seniors Melissa Penney, Lindsi Troxler (today's starting keeper), Ashley Stopa, Kate Lowe, Tracy FitzGerald and McCallion it was their last game at Bunting Field. The Pirates will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 29 when they travel to Marshall for the season finale. With a win, ECU can inch closer to securing their second consecutive spot in the Conference USA Tournament. |
