GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team held off a late scoring drive to tie 0-0 with UAB Friday afternoon at a very blustery Bunting Field. The Lady Pirates, who move to 9-3-5 on the season and 3-2-3 in Conference USA action, earned a spot in the 2007 C-USA Championships next week in El Paso, Texas with the tie. UAB is now 8-7-2, 4-3-1 in league play. Freshman Amanda Broz led the Pirates with three shots, one on goal. ECU registered 11 total shots on the day, five on goal. UAB's Danya Barsalona led the Blazers with three shots, one being placed on goal. UAB tallied 12 shots, with four on goal. East Carolina recorded five shots in the opening half, compared to six by the Blazers. The Pirates tallied six shots in the second half while UAB only had four, but it was the Blazers who had a shot in each overtime period. Neither shot, however, was on goal. "I thought that our team gave it their all both mentally and physically," head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. "UAB has some really dangerous players. They are really a handful. The wind was definitely a factor today, especially for us in the second half when we had to play into it. I thought that for the most part, however, this was a pretty even game. I am pretty happy and relieved that we are in (the C-USA Championships). Now we have to look forward to Sunday against Memphis to try and stay undefeated at home this season." The Pirates will play their final regular season game this Sunday, Nov. 4 as ECU welcomes Memphis to Bunting Field at Noon. East Carolina's five seniors (Kristen Allred, Jami Dickerson, Anastasia Nikas, Kat Norris and Patty Pierce) will be honored prior to the start.
