Soccer Tabbed Seventh In C-USA Preseason Poll

IRVING, Texas - Ten days before its first regular season game, the East Carolina soccer team has been picked to finish seventh in the 2012 Conference USA Preseason Poll the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
ECU, who posted an 11-8-1 record a year ago and advanced to the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament, welcomes back 20 letterwinners including All C-USA Tournament selections Christiane Cordero (goal keeper) and Hali Oughton (defender) as well as all-freshman selection Kelley Johnson. Cordero and Oughton anchored a defense that recorded five shutouts and posted a 1.37 goals against average. Johnson started two of 20 games played scoring her first collegiate goal against No. 21 William & Mary.
Other top returning players include seniors Caty Butler (14 career goals), Rachel Fuller (45 starts), Chrissy Gratz (eight career goals), Maddie Maurer (29 starts) and Rachel Wechsler (39 starts), and sophomores Lexi Miller (two goals) and Mackenzie Semerad (one goal).
ECU will continue its preseason camp with two practice sessions a day leading up to its lone exhibition match, which will take place on Friday, Aug. 10 at the ECU Soccer Stadium against Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. A week later, the 2012 season gets underway when the Pirates travel to Buies Creek, N.C. to faceoff against Campbell on Friday, Aug. 17 with a 7 p.m. scheduled start.
