GREENVILLE, N.C. - Caty Butler, Emmy Frederick and Kendall Frey each scored goals to help the East Carolina soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Coastal Carolina Friday night in exhibition play at the ECU Soccer Stadium.
The two teams played a controlled exhibition that consisted of two 45 periods and a 15 minute stanza.
Frey, a true freshman from Chester Springs, Pa., broke a scoreless tie in the 39th putting the Pirates up 1-0. Senior Katlin Povich sent a through pass into the box from 30 yards outs, where Frey placed a shot between the Meghan Spencer's legs.
"I thought we did some good things tonight," said ECU Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We possessed the ball well and made some good runs. Now we just have to get the ball to the runners to be more effective offensively.
"It was good to see Kendall (Frey) get her first career goal. I thought Chrissy (Gratz) played very well. She is very dangerous with her speed and we need to find ways to get her the ball. We were able to get everyone some playing time and I think the freshmen got a taste of what college soccer is like. But overall I thought we played very well."
Eleven minutes into the second half, Butler staked ECU to a 2-0 advantage scoring in the 5th minute of play. Senior Chrissy Gratz sent a corner kick to the far post, where Butler headed the ball past goalie Faith Farley to the lower left corner of the net.
ECU took a commanding 3-0 lead when Frederick scored from 26 yards out on a free kick just over Farley's head at the 66:43 mark.
Coastal finally got on the board in the 86th minute when Maddie Phillips scored on a loose ball inside the box just out of the reach of Pirate goalie Ally Glover. Darbie Kelley sent a pass in from 45 yards out on a free kick starting the Chanticleers scoring strike.
Junior Christiane Cordero played 64 minutes in goal for the Pirates recording a pair of saves. Glover finished the game with four stops in 46 minutes. Spencer has a pair of saves for Coastal, while Farley collected five.
The Pirates outshot the Chanticleers 16-10 on the night and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
ECU will open the 2012 regular season on the road at Campbell on Friday, Aug. 17 in Buies Creek, N.C. with a 7 p.m. (ET) start scheduled.
