GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team will play its only exhibition match of the 2013 preseason Friday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. against Coastal Carolina at CCU Soccer Field in Conway, S.C.
The teams met in an exhibition match in 2012 with the Pirates posting a 3-1 victory at the ECU Soccer Stadium. Kendall Frey broke a scoreless tie in the 39th minute before departed senior Caty Butler made it 2-0 11 minutes into the second half. Emmy Frederick gave the Pirates a commanding 3-0 lead at the 66:43 mark before Maddie Phillips put the Chanticleers on the board in the 86th minute.
The Pirates are coming off a 10-7-3 season in 2012 that saw them finish in fourth-place in Conference USA with a 6-2-3 mark. Fifteen letter winners are returning from last year's squad, including seven starters. Among the returning starters are All-Conference USA Freshman Team performers Frey and Haley Patsey.
Frey started 17 games last season and scored a pair of game winning goals, logging 1,252 minutes. As a defender, Patsey started all 20 games and helped the Pirates record a league-leading eight shutouts during league play.
Coastal Carolina posted a 10-9 overall record and finished fifth in the Big South Conference with a 7-4 mark. All-Big South Conference First-Team forward Kacey Kelly who led the Chanticleers with nine goals and 19 points last season headlines the group. Sophomore Fia Johnson (2012 Big South Freshman-of-the-Year) finished second on the team with five goals and 17 points, while distributing a team-high five assists also returns.
