GREENSBORO, NC - The East Carolina women's soccer team got a preview of the upcoming season this Tuesday evening as the Pirates defeated UNC Greensboro 2-0 in the squad's first scrimmage of the 2007 season.

After an hour delay due to inclement weather, both teams set foot on the field to start the 2007-08 women's soccer season.

Freshman Caylin Sandke scored the first goal of the game firing in an unassisted shot from the top of the box at the 43:30 mark of the first half. In the second half, an assist from junior Madison Keller set up a right wing shot for Amy Szilard at 66:05.

Both teams took full advantage of substitutions working to find the right on-field combinations. In the 90 minutes of play, 21 of the Pirates' soccer squad saw time and 20 members of the UNCG women's played.

The Pirates recorded seven saves en route to the shutout, with three coming from junior Amber Campbell and four from sophomore Jen Kurowicki.

"We played very well defensively and the team showed they play with a lot of competitive spirit," head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. "I was pleased with everyone's effort. It was good to see our freshmen step right into the college game and play well. I feel we need to continue to work on being more effective in the offensive third of the field but this will come with more training sessions."

ECU will host Western Carolina Saturday, Aug. 25 at 1:00 p.m. on Bunting Field for the teams' final scrimmage of the season. The Pirates officially open the 2007 season Aug. 31 against High Point at 4:00 p.m.
