ECU Women's Soccer Shuts Out Liberty For First Win

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina's Meghan McCallion scored her third goal of the season to lead the Pirates (1-1) to a 2-0 victory over Liberty University (0-2) in women's soccer action Sunday.

After a hot and scoreless first half, the Lady Pirates got on the scoreboard in the 54th minute when McCallion received a pass across the midfield from freshman Anastasia Nikas.

"Meghan McCallion never stopped working today," said ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "She got a little frustrated missing some shots, but the bottom line is she got the game-winner."

Just 61 seconds after the Pirates first goal, Nikas got her second assist of the match when she placed a corner kick inside the goalie box where senior Penny Perrott headed in the second goal of the day.

Offensively the Pirates out shot the Flames 30-5, and defensively goalkeeper Lauren Church made two saves and recorded her first career shutout.

"I thought our team played good soccer and created a lot of chances to score. Our backs did a good job today except for the one time that they broke through. We just had a little communication back there. Overall a strong performance I think for a lot of players. It was a hot day and our bench really helped us a lot."

The Lady Pirates are on the road for their next three matches before returning home to Bunting Field on Sept. 14., when they host Western Carolina at 1 p.m.
