McCallion Leads ECU Past Campbell, 3-1, in Women's Soccer
09/13/2002 BUIES CREEK, N.C.-- Freshman Megan McCallion scored three times to lead East Carolina over Campbell, 3-1, in women's soccer on Friday night. McCallion would get the first of her three strikes at 14:28, when a pass from teammate Amanda Duffy deflected off CU defender Christine Nitz, to McCallion who then settled the ball and broke in and beat Camel keeper Jamie Olson to give ECU (3-1-1) the 1-0 lead. CU (2-1-2) pulled even in the 17th minute when Susan Persson served a pass down the right flank to a streaking Lauren Dittrich, who played the ball to the middle of the field where an open Sara Davis collected the pass and beat Pirate keeper Lauren Church from 17 yards out. The Pirates reclaimed the lead at 50:54 when Duffy sent a pass to McCallion, who dribbled down the right flank and deposited the ball into the far post side of the net. McCallion capped off the scoring in the 68th minute, after receiving a pass from Tina Rivera, she used her left foot to score from 20 yards out. ECU out shot Campbell 25-9 and held an 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Olson recorded eight saves for CU, while Church made two saves of her own. Coach Donnenwirth commented "McCallion and Duffy were very dangerous up top, they did a great job putting a lot of pressure on them. I thought that the key to today's game was that we possessed the ball better. Our midfielders especially Jennifer Leonard and Rachelle Cabeceiras played a fantastic game for us." East Carolina will travel to Richmond Va. Sunday September 16, to take on Virginia Commonwealth.
