Cordero Named C-USA Defensive Player-of-the-Week

IRVING, Texas - East Carolina junior keeper Christiane Cordero has been named Conference USA Defensive Player-of-the-Week according the league office Monday. For Cordero, it is her first career weekly honor. The Valencia, Calif. native, who was also named College Sports Madness C-USA Player-of-the-Week, recorded a pair of shutouts over the weekend against UTEP and Colorado College to help the Pirates (6-4) to their first 2-0 start in league play since the 2008 season. Cordero tallied 11 saves on the weekend playing all 180 minutes in goal and recorded her third and fourth clean sheets of the year. Against UTEP, she stopped all five shots she faced in a 1-0 victory. She followed that with six saves in another 1-0 win, snapping Colorado College's five-match win streak. In six games at home, she is 5-1, allowing just two goals (0.33 GAA), posting four shutouts and making 20 saves. Overall, she has allowed 13 goals (1.29 GAA) in 903 minutes facing 48 shots with 35 saves (.729 percentage). For her career, Cordero has started all 48 career games played in goal for the Pirates logging 211 saves with 11 shutouts, a 1.37 GAA and a .762 save percentage. The Pirates return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 28 when they travel to Memphis for an 8 p.m. (ET) match and will continue their road swing at UAB on Sunday, Sept. 30 with a 2 p.m. (ET) scheduled start.
