Pirates and Blazers Game Suspended at 1-1 Due To Severe Weather
Sept. 30, 2011
ECU 1, UAB 1 (Suspended Box Score) GREENVILLE, N.C. - Following a 66-minute rain delay, the Conference USA soccer match between East Carolina (5-3-1, 0-2) and UAB (3-7-0, 0-2) Friday night was suspended due to severe rain and lightning in the area and will be made up at a later date. At the time of the delay the score was tied 1-1 in the second half. UAB took 1-0 lead in the 24th minute of play when Tiffini Turpin scored on an open net for her second strike of the season. Turpin battled through a trio of defenders, including ECU keeper Christiane Cordero, and found a wide open net staking the Blazers to an early advantage. Jessica Abshire tied the game at one in the 30th minute when she scored on a free kick at the top of the box at the 29:13 mark. After a UAB foul, Hali Oughton sent a free kick 10 feet from behind the midfield line into the box where Abshire headed in the goal, her first of the season. For Oughton it was her third assist. Both keepers played all 56 minutes of the match with Cordero recording two saves and C.J. Winship posting three. The Pirates held a commanding 11-3 lead on shots (4-3 on goal), while the Blazers had a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks before the delay. ECU will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they play host to the sixth-ranked Memphis Tigers at 2 p.m. (ET). Note: Statistics and team records for this match are not official until the game has been completed.
