Lady Pirates Come Up Short Against No. 9 Wake Forest
10/01/2003 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—For the third time this season, the East Carolina women's soccer team came up short against a nationally ranked opponent, falling to No. 9 Wake Forest, 1-0, in Wednesday nights match at Spry Stadium. The Pirates (5-4-2) gave up the lone goal in the first half when the Demon Deacon's (8-1-1) Elizabeth Remy found Meagan Mullins on a corner kick six-yards in the box. Mullins' put a shot just out of reach of Pirate goalie Lindsi Troxler at the 33:36 mark. In the second half, the Pirates switched up its attack, moving to a 3-4-3 to add some pressure on Wake's backfield while trying to generate some scoring opportunities. ECU had two scoring chances in the final minutes of play, but was unable to get anything by Wake's keeper Kenna Healy, who recorded her sixth shutout of the season. ECU's defense limited the Deacons offense to just eight shots on the night. "I felt we did a great job defending tonight," said ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We were able to switch to a 3-4-3 and put pressure on them. We had several good looks on goal, but couldn't put the ball in the net to get a win." Early this season, the Pirates loss to No. 9 Texas, 5-3, in a neutral site match at SAS Park in Cary, N.C., and fell 2-1 to the No. 6 Florida Gators in Gainesville, Fla.
