McCallion Records Hat Trick in 4-0 Win Over DePaul
10/01/2004 GREENVILLE, N.C. — Junior forward Meghan McCallion collected three goals and one assist to lead East Carolina (3-6-1, 1-1-0) to a 4-0 victory over Conference USA foe DePaul (5-6-0, 1-3-0) Friday afternoon at Bunting Field. McCallion, who recorded her first collegiate hat trick, got the Pirates on the board early when she scored off a Krystel Pabey midfield pass from 35 yards out for her third goal of the season and 23rd of her career in the 20th minute. Just six minutes later, McCallion put ECU up 2-0 when she hooked up with junior forward Carmen Calpo in the 26th minute of play. Calpo stole a pass from DePaul's Stefanie Foley and found McCallion all alone from 15 yards out. In the second half of play, McCallion scored her fifth goal of the season when she intercepted a DePaul pass and dribbled through traffic scoring at the 60-minute mark. The Pirates got one last insurance goal when senior midfielder Sarah Stoltz received a pass from McCallion from 17 yards out and placed a ball over Blue Demon keeper Lindsey Deason's head. Freshman Patty Pierce had the daunting task of shadowing DePaul's Julianne Sitch, the 2003 C-USA Offensive Player of the Year and 2004 Preseason Player of the Year, all afternoon. Pierce was able to completely shut Sitch down not allowing her to record a shot during the match. "This was great effort by our team today," said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We made some changes for this game by using Patty Pierce as a pure marker against Julianne Sitch, and she played unbelievable today. DePaul had their chances and I thought we did a good job counter attacking. Meghan McCallion was definitely 100 percent on her game today and Lauren Church came up big in the goal for us. This was a great win for the Pirates." With the win, the Pirates snap a six game winless streak on the season and a three-game loosing streak in C-USA play, dating back to 2003. ECU will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 3 when they host Marquette at Bunting Field at 1 p.m. ECU DPU Goals 4 0 Shots 16 14 Shots on Goal 10 7 Corner Kicks 3 4 Saves 7 6 Fouls 12 10
