ECU Women's Soccer Battles UC in Scoreless Game
10/14/2002

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Cincinnati's women's soccer team out-shot East Carolina 20-9 for the game, but the teams played to a 0-0 tie. The match, which was originally scheduled for Friday at East Carolina was rescheduled for Monday night due to poor field conditions. The tie moves UC to 9-2-2 overall and 3-0-2 in C-USA play while East Carolina is now 7-3-3 and 3-1-2 in conference.

Cincinnati dominated the stats in the first half. UC out shot East Carolina 7-2 and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, but could not net a goal. The Bearcats best opportunity came in the 27th minute. Amy Simonson blasted a shot from the top of the box, but the ECU goalkeeper Michelle Kmiotek came up with a nice save, deflecting the ball over the crossbar.

UC had another good chance early in the second half. Amy Mink's shot off a corner kick was saved off the line by the ECU defense. Tianna Oliver gathered the rebound and fired a shot just to the right. With four minutes remaining in regulation, Stacey Kyser slid a pass ahead to Tianna Oliver who was unable to connect on the break away. East Carolina appeared to be closing in on a break, but Heather Herweh stepped back and denied the opportunity. The Bearcats led the Pirates in shots, 14-6 in the game, but the score remained 0-0 at the end of regulation.

The first overtime was dominated by Cincinnati, who had four shots with two near misses. Rachel Lieberman came within inches of ending the match in the first overtime, but her shot sailed inches away from the post. One minute later Amy Simonson had an opportunity at an open net, but her shot was barely wide to the left.

Both teams traded shots in the second overtime period with neither team mounting a serious threat. Tracy Hale had four saves for the Bearcats while Kmiotek recorded nine.

The Pirates return to Bunting Field October 25 to take on Marquette at 2 p.m.
