Soccer Gameday Central

GREENVILLE, N.C. - After suffering a 1-0 loss at Colorado College Friday, the East Carolina soccer team looks to get back on the winning track today at UTEP. The Pirates (8-5-2, 3-4-0 C-USA) and Miners (11-4-0, 5-2-0 C-USA) are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

ECU has never lost to UTEP, going 2-0-1. The Pirates won 2-0 in Greenville in 2006, tied 1-1 in El Paso in 2007 and took last season’s contest in Greenville, 2-1.

In 2008, Kimmy Cummings scored her first career goal at 33:27 before UTEP’s Brandi Aston tied the game at the 38:19 mark. Jessica Swanson tallied the game-winning goal at 64:49 off a corner kick. Nicole Moore had the assist on the deciding goal.

Next weekend, East Carolina returns home for this season’s final games at Bunting Field. The Pirates face UAB at 3 p.m. Friday and Memphis at 1 p.m. Sunday for Senior Day.

Facts to Know Before Gametime ...

Butler’s Winners ...
With her two game-winning goals in Conference USA play, freshman Caty Butler became the first ECU freshman to tally two deciding goals in league play since Amanda Broz in 2007. Both Butler and Broz had one of their game-winning goals against Southern Miss. Broz’ other came at Rice.

More Shots = Wins ...
ECU is 7-1-1 when outshooting its opponent this season, but just 1-4-1 when the foe has the edge in attempts.

Scoring Slows Down ...
East Carolina has had its scoring average gradually decrease since entering Conference USA play. In nonconference games, the Pirates averaged 2.00 goals per game. In C-USA action, ECU has managed just 1.00 goals per contest.

Malkiewicz Picks Up Five ...
Last Sunday against SMU, sophomore Amanda Malkiewicz scored her fifth goal of the season at the 83:30 mark. The five goals are one more than she recorded as a freshman last season. Malkiewicz also has four assists this year, giving her 14 total points, equaling last season’s mark.

Two Is The Magic Number ...
Since the start of the 2006 season, ECU has posted a 30-0-3 record when scoring two or more goals. The only ties occurred in a 2-2 game Sept. 11 at N.C. State earlier this season and twice last year in a 2-2 draw at UAB on Oct. 24 and the following game’s 3-3 deadlock at home against regular-season cochampion Memphis on Oct. 26.

Tough To Beat In OT ...
Since the start of the 2007 season, the Pirates have gone 6-1-10 in games that have stretched into overtime or double-overtime. The only loss occurred at UCF on Oct. 7, 2007, when Yvonne George scored with 58 seconds remaining in the second OT. This season, ECU is 1-0-2 when going extra time after posting a 4-0-4 mark in overtime contests last year.
