GREENVILLE, N.C. – After compiling a pair of league wins over Florida International and Florida Atlantic last weekend,  he East Carolina women’s soccer team will make its final Conference USA road trip with games against Southern Miss and Rice.

The Pirates will square off against the Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Friday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m., before heading on to Houston, Texas on Sunday, Oct. 27 for a 2 p.m., match against Rice. Houston is also the site of the 2013 C-USA Tournament, which will be held Nov. 6-10.

In last Friday’s overtime win at FIU, redshirt sophomore Lexi Herring made her first-career start and scored her first-career goal in putting the Pirates ahead of the Panthers, 1-0, in the 11th minute. With the score tied, 1-1, at the end of regulation, sophomore Kendall Frey scored the game-winning goal just four minutes into overtime to lift ECU to the 2-1 victory.

East Carolina returned home Sunday afternoon to host FAU, where redshirt junior Skylar Poole scored the game’s only goal just six minutes into the match. It was the lone goal in the game, which not only gave the Pirates a 1-0 win over the Owls, but it was Poole’s third game-winning goal of the season.


The area in front of the East Carolina has looked impenetrable at times this year, as the Pirates have shut out four opponents this year and are yielding just 1.12 goals per game , while holding opponents to a .087 shooting percentage.

Redshirt junior midfielder Skylar Poole has scored three game-winning goals this season, the latest coming against Florida Atlantic last Sunday, Oct. 20. ECU owns a 6-3-1 record when Poole is in the starting lineup, which includes a 3-0-0 mark in C-USA matches.

Redshirt sophomore midfielder Lexi Herring made her first-career start at Florida International last Friday, Oct. 18, and scored her first-career goal just 11 minutes into the match.

Freshman defender Caitlin Hite has played every minute in 14 of the Pirates’ 16 matches during her first campaign, and ranks second on the team in minutes played with 1486, only behind goalkeeper Saundra Baron. Included in that total are four double-overtime games.

-The Golden Eagles have lost their last three matches and have been held scoreless in each of their last six matches.

-Despite their rough stretch, Southern Miss is outscoring their opponents 38-24 overall and by a 2:1 ratio (22-11) in the second half of their games this season.

- USM is led by forward Danica Roberts (No .23) who is the focal point of the offense and leads the team in goals (12), points (27), shots (70), and shots on goal (37).

-The Owls have dropped three of their last four games, while allowing nine goals in just their last two matches.

-Just two days after East Carolina defeated FIU on its home field, Rice fell 5-2 against the Panthers.

-The Owls have a balanced offensive attack and are led by striker Holly Hargreaves’ six goals. Forward Lauren Hughes leads the team in points (16) and assists (6), shots (45) and shots on goal (24) and is tied for second on the team in goals with midfielder Quinny Truong with five.
