Women's Soccer Takes On Charlotte For Final Tournament Spot
10/30/2003

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's soccer team is faces its biggest opponent of the year when instate rival Charlotte comes to Bunting Field for Friday afternoon's match.

The Pirates (7-6-5, 3-3-3) look to gain the eighth and final spot in the Conference USA Tournament with a win over the 49ers (6-11-1, 4-4-1). ECU has struggled of late, winning one of its last six games, which includes three ties. But this weekend, a tie will not be good enough for head coach Rob Donnenwirth and his Pirates.

"Its simple, we need to win Friday to move on," said Donnenwirth. "A tie will not be good enough. We'll have our hands full with a talented Charlotte team that has been hot lately."

The 49ers have won five of their last six games behind the play of sophomore forward Courtney Crandell, who has scored eight goals this season.

"Against Courtney we will play a zone defense," said Donnenwirth. "But we'll definitely keep our eyes on her because she can shoot from anywhere on the field and has a nose for the goal."

To add to the drama, this match is also designated as Senior Day. Four Lady Pirates —Cristin Bowman, Mindy Nixon, Penny Perrott and Tina Rivera— will play their final match at Bunting Field.

"The team understands there is a lot at stake this weekend," added Donnenwirth. "Nothing would make the team happier than to send these girls out with a win at home. And if that happens, they'll get to play a little longer."

Friday's match will start at 2 p.m., with senior introductions schedule for 1:45 p.m. Admission is free of charge and fans that wear a Halloween costume to the game will have a chance to win a prize from the Pirates for the best costume.
