Women's Soccer Falls To Charlotte 1-0 In Home Finale
10/31/2003

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's soccer team fell to instate rival Charlotte in overtime, 1-0, before a crowd of 300 cheering for the Purple and Gold in its home finale of the season.

The Pirates (7-7-5, 3-4-3) could not find the net in its 15 opportunities during the match, just missing the mark on six shots. In the first half, ECU recorded 10 shots and narrowly missed on three of them, two within seconds of one another.

Sophomore forward, Meghan McCallion received a pass from Krystel Pabey at the 28 minute mark and fired a rocket up the middle of the goal that was deflected by Charlotte keeper Shannon Huffman, then Sarah Stoltz tried for the follow-up and once again Huffman made a great play to keep the game knotted at zeroes.

Charlotte (7-11-1, 5-4-1) forced the Pirates into its sixth overtime match of the season, when in the closing seconds of the match Huffman collected another save off a Carmen Calpo missed shot.

Just one minute into the overtime period, 49er sophomore Lindsey Palmiero broke free by splitting two Pirate defenders and placed the ball into the lower left corner of the goal for the 49er win.

"Charlotte battled hard against us today," said ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "I thought we put them under an extreme amount of pressure, but they never broke. They got an opportunistic goal in the end and they're heading to the C-USA Tournament. I thought our whole team played hard and left everything out on the field today."

With the loss, the Pirates finish the season 4-1-4 at home in Bunting Field.
