Women's Soccer Wins First Round Game at C-USA Tournament
11/06/2002

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- East Carolina (11-5-4) scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat seventh-seeded Houston (8-8-3), 2-0, in the second quarterfinal game of the 2002 Conference USA Women's Soccer Tournament at Charlotte's Transamerica Field on Wednesday.

The third-seeded Pirates scored in the 59th minute, when freshman Meghan McCallion (Bay Shore, N.Y.) connected on a shot off a long-lead pass from freshman goalkeeper Michelle Kmiotek (Tampa, Fla.) to give ECU a 1-0 lead. In the 81st minute, senior Amanda Duffy (Jacksonville, N.C.) sealed the win when she collected a Krystel Pabey (Naugatuck, Conn.) pass and connected on a shot from 10 yards out.

"I thought we did a pretty good of controlling the flow of the game early playing into wind," ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "I told our team at halftime that we need to get ball into the box and we were fortunate to get two goals doing that."

East Carolina advances to meet second-seeded Cincinnati in Thursday's first semifinal game at 5 p.m.
