Feb. 26, 2006
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- East Carolina scored two runs in its final at-bat, but left the tying run on third base and dropped a 5-4 decision to College of Charleston Sunday afternoon in the final game of the CofC Cougar Classic.
Trailing 3-0, ECU (10-4) scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to cut its deficit to a single run. Angel Barella and Alison Monce led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Both runners then moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Quick before scoring on a two-out double by Krista Jessup.
CofC (6-5) pushed its lead back to three, 5-2, by scoring a run in the six and seventh innings.
The Pirates put together a late charge in the seventh, collecting three consecutive singles to start the inning.
Quick singled up the middle to plate Monce from second base after Erin St. Ledger laced a single to left. Jessup then sacrificed both runners into scoring position.
Monce collected three of the Pirates' nine hits during the game, while scoring a pair of runs.
ECU freshman Brooke Swann (2-1) suffered the first loss of her career, while Shannon Howard (3-4) earned the victory for CofC.
Swann struck out three in six innings, but did struggle with her control walking five, while allowing just two earned runs before giving way to Keli Harrell in the seventh.
ECU returns to action on Friday, March 3, as it hosts the Hampton Inn Express Pirate Clash. The Pirates will play Delaware at 9:30 a.m. in the tournament opener.
