BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- East Carolina's softball team (9-16, 1-1 C-USA) dropped the second game of its conference series with UAB (12-6, 4-1 C-USA) on Saturday, March 16. Despite being outhit 11 to five and falling behind by five runs after the first inning, the Pirates found a way to hang around and brought the potential lead run to the plate in the seventh inning before taking the 7-4 loss.
Courtney Smith (1-6) was knocked out of the game in the first inning and allowed three runs in 0.1 of an inning. She then re-entered the game in the third and threw the final four scoreless frames. Mary Beth Smith threw 1.2 innings in relief and allowed four runs (three earned). Leigh Streetman (6-3) earned the win with six innings and four runs allowed (two earned). Lannah Campbell entered the game in the seventh with the bases loaded and recorded three straight out to earn her fourth save of the season.
ECU rallied from the early deficit and put both the tying and lead run on base when it loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning with no outs. Junior Jordan Lewis drew a lead-off walk, senior Cicely Lopez hit a soft sinking line drive single to short, senior Kai Clark then followed with a single through the left side to load the bases, but the next three Pirate batters were retired on back-to-back strikeouts and a line out to third to end the game.
The Blazers broke the game open with five in the first. Caitlin Attfield reached on a lead-off bunt single and scored on Amy Dennis' double. Dennis would score just ahead of Kristen McGrath's seventh home run. Chandler Orr then reached on a bunt single to start the second rally of the inning. Kate Armstrong was hit by a pitch. Megan McGrath singled up the middle to score Orr. Hayley Davis was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Attfield. Attfield followed with a walk to drive in the fifth run of the inning.
UAB added a pair of runs to the lead in the second on an ECU fielding error and an RBI single from Armstrong.
The Pirates climbed back into the game with four runs in the fourth inning. Junior Kristi Oshiro reached on a one-out double to left field. Junior Alex Fieldhouse then walked to put a pair of runners on base. Alcorn followed with a grounder to second that was mishandled and went into right field to score Oshiro from second base. Junior Jordan Lewis laced a triple down the right-field line to score both Fieldhouse and Alcorn. The triple was her second three-bagger of the season. Junior Jasmine Robbins drove in the fourth run with her ground out to shortstop to score Lewis and cut the deficit to three at 7-4, but that was as close the Pirates would get in the loss.
