EL PASO, Texas – Junior Jill Jelnick drove in a pair of runs and sophomore Courtney Smith threw her second shutout of the season to lead the East Carolina softball team (12-21, 3-5 Conference USA) to a 9-0 victory over UTEP (12-18, 1-6 Conference USA) in the second game of the doubleheader on Friday. With the win in each game, the Pirates have now won their first conference series of the season.

Smith (2-9) allowed just five hits and struck out four in earning her second win of the season. Both Smith wins have come when she has thrown a shutout this season. UTEP’s Colleen Holman (4-7) was tagged with the loss and allowed two runs in her two innings.

ECU had 10 hits in the game with junior Kristi Oshiro, freshman Casey Alcorn, senior Kai Clark and freshman Meredith Mitchell reaching base twice via hits.

The Pirates scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning. Alcorn was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice moved her over to second. Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin and Mitchell both drew walks to load the bases. Jelnick followed with a sacrifice fly to score the first run. Oshiro plated the next with a hard single to left field.

ECU ripped off seven hits and five runs in the fourth inning. Mitchell doubled down the right field line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Jelnick’s second sacrifice fly of the game.  Oshiro singled, stole second and then scored on junior Alex Fieldhouse’s single to center. The RBI was her sixth of the day between the two games. Junior Jordan Lewis doubled in Fieldhouse. Lewis moved to third on a Briggs single up the middle and then scored on an Alcorn single to right. After a single by Clark to load the bases, Briggs scored the fifth run of the inning and seventh of the game on an illegal pitch.

The Pirates completed the scoring with two runs in the sixth inning on Clark’s second home run of the season with Briggs on base. Briggs had reached on a fielder’s choice and scored ahead of Clark on the long home run to center field.

ECU wraps up the series against UTEP with a 2 p.m. (ET) game at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex on Saturday.
