EL PASO, Texas - Junior Kristi Oshiro picked up three hits and three RBI to back sophomore Sarah Christian's shutout, as East Carolina's softball team recorded its third straight conference win over UTEP by a score of 8-0 on Saturday at Helen of Troy Field. The Pirates swept their first conference series of the season with three-straight wins over the Miners.
Christian (10-9) threw her first shutout of the season and surrendered just five hits, no walks while recording four strikeouts. UTEP's Colleen Holman (4-8) was tagged with the loss and allowed seven runs in 3.1 innings thrown.
Besides the three hits and RBI, Oshiro also walked and scored a pair of runs. Eight of the nine members of the ECU starting lineup recorded hits and all were able to reach base safely at least once in the victory. The Pirates had 11 hits and five walks in the game.
The Pirates scored first with a run in the opening inning, but had a golden opportunity to break the game open as the team loaded the bases with only one out. Junior Jill Jelnick and Oshiro both walked on eight-straight pitches to start the game. After a strikeout, junior Jordan Lewis then walked to load the bases for freshman Kelsi Briggs. Briggs pushed a ball to the wall in center to score Jelnick with the first run of the game. A strikeout ended the potential bigger inning for the Pirates though.
ECU added three runs to the lead in the second inning. Senior Kai Clark singled and moved to second on junior Jasmine Robbins' single. After a strikeout, Jelnick pushed a single just over the infield to load the bases for Oshiro. Oshiro delivered a single up the middle to drive in Clark and Robbins. Jelnick, who took third on the play at the plate, scored on junior Alex Fieldhouse's sacrifice fly.
East Carolina scored a single run in the third inning as Casey Alcorn hit her third home run of the season off the UTEP scoreboard in right center field.
UTEP attempted to mount a rally in the bottom of the frame. Ashley Collazo and Miraya Montiel reached on back-to-back singles to begin the inning. After a strikeout, Tahla Wade recorded an infield single to load the bases. Christian then induced a fielder's choice grounder to third that saw Fieldhouse eliminate the lead runner at the plate and an infield pop out to the shortstop to keep the UTEP offense scoreless.
The Pirates continued the scoring with another run in the fourth inning. Mitchell drew lead-off walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Oshiro's single up the middle. Oshiro moved to second on a Lewis single and was plated on a Briggs' single up the middle to give the Pirates a 7-0 advantage.
ECU closed out the game's scoring with a single tally in the sixth inning on a Fieldhouse double to score Oshiro with the eighth run of the game. Oshiro had reached earlier in the inning on a single to right and moved to second as the back half of an unsuccessful double steal and then scored all the way from second on the double.
