MIAMI, Fla. – Jordan Lewis and Casey Alcorn each hit home runs and eight different players recorded at least one hit, as the East Carolina softball team pounded out 11 hits en route to a 12-2 win at FIU in Sunday’s series finale.
After lightning and rain suspended the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader in the top of the fifth inning with Florida International leading, 2-0, play resumed on Sunday morning.
The Pirates brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the sixth, but were unable to capitalize, as FIU went on to close out the seventh inning and hold on for the victory.
East Carolina (17-13, 6-6 C-USA) and FIU (22-13, 5-4 C-USA) got the final game of the series underway shortly after the conclusion of game two, and Abby Wynne hit a one-out sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the first inning to scoring Kaluhiokalani-Glackin and give the Pirates an early 1-0 advantage.
The Panthers pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to cut their deficit to three, but the Pirates made it 6-2 on a bases-loaded RBI single up the middle by Jill Jelnick in the top of the fourth inning.
East Carolina loaded the bases again with no outs in the top of the fifth after a double by Alcorn, single by Jasmine Robbins and Kaluhiokalani-Glackin reached on an error. Shelby Johnson and Kristi Oshiro hit back-to-back RBI groundouts to the right side, scoring Alcorn and Mitchell (who pinch-ran for Robbins), to give the Pirates an 8-2 lead.
Alex Fieldhouse followed up with an RBI single to right field, before Lewis hit a monster three-run home run over the right centerfield fence to increase the advantage to 12-2. The big fly was Lewis’ third of the weekend, eighth of the season and 22nd of her career, moving her into sole possession of fifth place on the program’s all-time list.
Alcorn finished the day 3-for-3 with a single, double and homer with two runs scored and two RBI, as Lewis 1-for-1 with two runs, three RBI and a pair of walks. Wynne also went 1-for-1 with three RBI and drew two walks, and Oshiro batted 2-for-3 with a run and one RBI.
Christian (12-5) earned the win, spinning five innings of four-hit ball while allowing two runs and a walk to go with four strikeouts.
East Carolina will return home to host Southern Miss in a three-game Conference USA series next Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6 at the ECU Softball Stadium.
