HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sophomore Courtney Smith only allowed one run in throwing a complete game for East Carolina’s softball team (21-26, 11-8 C-USA), but fell to Southern Miss (13-37, 3-15 C-USA) in the first game of the doubleheader between the teams by a 1-0 score on Saturday. The loss snapped ECU’s seven-game conference winning streak.
Smith (5-11) surrendered just the one run on five hits, but was outdueled by Beth Dietrich in the loss. Dietrich allowed just three hits and no walks with three strikeouts.
USM scored the only run of the game in sixth inning. Kimberly Wagner singled to the inning. Kaitlin Wilson ran for her and moved to second and then third on ground outs. Danielle LaPointe followed with a single to center to score the game’s only run.
ECU threatened in the seventh as freshman Casey Alcorn reached with one-out. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but a pop out and strikeout ended the game for the Pirates.
The Pirates defense turned a nice double play to end the Golden Eagles’ third inning as junior Alex Fieldhouse fielded the ball at third, relayed the ball to junior Kristi Oshiro at second who threw it to junior Jordan Lewis at first.
ECU picked up the team’s first hit of the game as Lewis roped a two-out single to left in the fourth, but a pop out ended the threat.

The Golden Eagles picked up back-to-back two outs hits in the sixth inning by Taylor Beck and Michelle Stronger, but a pop out ended the frame.
