GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team suffered a 4-1 setback to UTEP in its Conference USA regular-season finale on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at the ECU Softball Stadium.
East Carolina (27-19, 14-10 C-USA) will wait for official seeding for next weekend’s C- USA Tournament, which will be held in Boca Raton, Fla., at Florida Atlantic University. First round action will begin on Thursday, May 8.
The first two innings went scoreless, but UTEP put up three hits including an RBI single to force a pitching change as ECU starter Sarah Christian handed the ball to Caroline Umphlett. The Miners’ next hitter hit a three-run homer just over the left field wall as they pulled ahead by four.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Kristi Oshiro drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. Three batters later and with two outs, Jordan Lewis roped an RBI triple all the way to the wall in left centerfield to score Oshiro and cut the deficit to three.
Lewis’ RBI was the 40th of the year and she becomes the first ECU player since 2010 to drive in that many in a season.
Umphlett was dominant the rest of the way in the circle as she allowed just two hits over five-plus scoreless frames while striking out two.
