OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – East Carolina senior All-America Toni Paisley is one of 30 NCAA softball student-athlete candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award the organization announced Wednesday. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Paisley is the only student-athlete selected from Conference USA.

A social work major, Paisley held a 3.53 cumulative grade-point average when she graduated in May of 2010 and is currently pursuing a second bachelor’s degree. During her years at East Carolina, Paisley has been a four-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll (3.0+ GPA) selection and was named to the 2010 Conference USA All-Academic Team.

Following the spring 2010 semester, Paisley made the East Carolina Chancellor’s List after posting a 4.0 GPA. That semester, she also completed an internship as a case manager with Pitt County Schools, working with students who were on legal probation and whose goals were to have perfect attendance and graduate from high school.

On the field, Paisley has become one of the most decorated athletes in East Carolina history. A year ago, she was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-America Third Team, becoming the third All-America selection in program history. She also repeated as a Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region Team member, Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Year and First-Team All-C-USA selection.

The Preseason Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Year has gotten off to a hot start in 2011. Paisley has allowed three runs in 25 innings pitched, good for a 0.84 earned-run average. The Lakewood, Calif., native has scattered nine hits and allowed just three walks compared with 43 strikeouts. She is holding opponents to a .108 batting average this year.

With last night’s victory over UNC Wilmington, Paisley has 89 career wins – good for sole possession of third on both the East Carolina and Conference USA all-time lists. She also needs just 12 strikeouts to pass former coach and 2007 teammate Keli Harrell for the school and league record. Paisley (937) and Harrell (948) are the only pitchers in league history with 900 or more whiffs.

Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the winner April 3 at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Paisley and the rest of the East Carolina team returns to action Friday with a 2:00 p.m. contest against Virginia as part of the Pirate Classic. ECU plays St. John’s approximately 20 minutes following the completion of the game against the Cavaliers.
