Softball Team Earns Another Split On Day Two Of The Dixie Classic
02/28/2004 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- For a second straight day, the East Carolina softball team won one and lost one at the Dixie Classic. The Pirates defeated Fordham in their first game of the day, 3-1, before being shut out by Seton Hall in game two, 4-0.
ECU (10-2-1) needed very little offense in its first game as freshman pitcher Keli Harrell held the Rams to just four hits, while striking out 10. The only run she gave up was a solo home run to Sami Crocker to lead off the 7th. All three of the Pirates' runs scored courtesy of home runs. Sophomore Christine Sheridan hit a solo home run in the first to get ECU on the scoreboard. Junior Mandi Nichols then added hit a two-out, two-run homer in the sixth to give the Pirates added cushion. Game two saw another outstanding Pirate pitching performance, unfortunately for ECU it was the Seton Hall Pirates' Megan Meyer who was on top of her game. Meyer limited ECU to just one hit and allowed only two players to reach base. Krista Jessup recorded the only hit for East Carolina. Meyer picked up the victory tossing a complete-game, one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts. ECU junior pitcher Maggie Lingo suffered her first loss of the season, giving up four runs on seven hits. The Pirates will return to action Sunday, Feb. 29, against George Mason. The game is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start.
