HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The East Carolina softball team finishes up its stay on the islands with contests against Syracuse and Hawai'i on Tuesday night (10 p.m. ET) and early Wednesday morning (12 a.m. ET), respectfully, in the early portion of the week. The Pirates enter the week's action with an overall record of 8-13 and are looking to end a current two-game losing streak.

Pirates Go 1-2 at the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament
East Carolina won its exhibition game against Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education by a thrilling 6-5 margin, but then fell to both Portland State (9-0 in five innings) and No. 21/24 Hawai'i (8-0 in six innings) in the next two contest ... The final day of the tournament was cancelled because of rain mass in the area over the islands.

East Carolina Versus Ranked Opponents
The Pirates will again play a ranked opponent this week with their game against No. 20/23 Hawai'i on Wednesday (March 13 at 12 a.m. ET)... ECU is 0-3 against ranked opponents this season after falling to then No. 22/20 Baylor (5-2) and then No. 3/3 Arizona State (13-0) two weekends ago in the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational and then No. 21/24 Hawai'i (8-0) last weekend... Since 1996, the Pirates have played 74 games against teams ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll ... In those contests, East Carolina is 9-65, including a mark of 3-33 since 2008 ... Last season, the Pirates played six games against ranked teams.

Offense Continues To Impress
East Carolina's offense has had a strong start to the season with a .279 team batting average ... The batting average is the second highest for the program after 21 games since 2008, and the seventh time that the team's hitting has been over .275 upon completion of 21 games over the last 10 years ... The program's 32 doubles are also tied for the second most in that same 10-year span (the 2005 team had 34 two-baggers)  ... The 147 hits are the second-highest total since the 2008 team's 178 ... The 231 total bases are the most since 2008 (264 total bases) and marks the fourth time with 220 or more total bases in the first 21 games in the last 10 seasons.

On A Streak
After drawing a walk against Hawai'i, Jordan Lewis has reach base in 15 of the team's last 16 games.

Recent Trends
In the last 10 games, Kristi Oshiro leads the team with her .467 batting average (11-for-30) with three runs and four doubles ... Meredith Mitchell has picked up her play with a .364 batting average (8-for-22) with a pair of doubles ... Jordan Lewis is hitting .348 with eight hits including a home run ... Alex Fieldhouse sports a .333 batting average with 10 hits, three home runs and 10 RBI

Even in Paradise It Rains
East Carolina had a pair of games rained out at the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament in Hawai'i on Sunday, March 10, because of a rain system, so even in paradise weather plays a factor ... The cancelled games were the third and fourth of the season for ECU ... The other games were cancelled because of an unexpected cold and snowy system that hit the Greenville, N.C. area back in late February.

We Still Have Bragging Rights
The exhibition game between East Carolina and Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education (TWCPE) on March 8 may not have counted in the standings, but it was still a memorable game for all the ECU players and fans that were in attendance ... The Pirates trailed 5-2 with two outs in the sixth when the team fought back to tie the game on single, a fielding error and another single ... In the seventh inning it was Kristi Oshiro 's two-out rifled single to left that scored Kelsi Briggs from third with the game-winner ... Oshiro, a Hawaiian native, made her return to the islands memorable with a 3-for-3 day with three RBI and two runs scored against TWCPE ... Freshman Morgan Eisenga had the best outing of her young career with two scoreless inning and two strikeouts to earn the victory in the contest.

Individual Conference Leaders
The Pirates, through the fifth week of softball action, have several players that are ranked highly in Conference USA ...  Junior Kristi Oshiro leads the conference in batting average (.435), triples (4) and total bases (45) ... She is second in on-base percentage (.493) and runs (19) plus third in slugging percentage (.726), tied for third in hits (27), tied for fourth in doubles (7) and tied for eighth in sacrifice bunts (3) ... Junior Alex Fieldhouse is second in slugging percentage (.746), total bases (44) and sacrifice flies (2) ... She is third in RBI (18), tied for fourth in home runs (5), tied for seventh in doubles (6) and tied for ninth in hits (21) ... Junior Jill Jelnick is tied for ninth in runs scored (13) and tied for fifth in triples (1) ... Junior Jordan Lewis is tied for fifth in triples (1), seventh in batting average (.357) and tied for eighth in stolen bases (8) ... Sophomore Sarah Christian is third in appearances (16),tied for fifth in wins (6) and innings pitched (69.2) ... She is also eighth in strikeouts (46) ... Freshman Mary Beth Smith is ninth in ERA (2.76).

Team Conference Leaders
ECU, as a team, leads the conference in slugging percentage (.438) and is tied for the lead in triples (8) ... The Pirates are second in batting average (.279) and tied for second in doubles (32), tied for third in home runs (12) and total bases (231) ... ECU is also fourth in on-base percentage (.349), hits (147) and stolen bases (21).

NCAA Leaders
Kristi Oshiro ranks among the NCAA leaders in several categories in the first release of statistics this week (3/10) ... Oshiro is fifth in triples (4.0), 10th in triples per game (0.19), 11th in toughest to strikeout (62.0) 46th in batting average (.435), 67th in doubles per game (0.33) 85th in slugging percentage (.726), 100th in on-base percentage (.493) and 108th in runs (0.98) ... Alex Fieldhouse also finds herself among the NCAA leaders in several categories ... She is 70th in slugging percentage (.746), 92nd in home runs (5.0), 116th in home runs per game (0.24) and 137th in doubles per game (0.29) ... Jordan Lewis is 125th nationally in stolen bases per game (0.38) ... In the circle, Sarah Christian is 84th in walks per seven innings ((1.81) and 114th in wins (6.0)

Need To Keep Them Scoreless in the First
The Pirates have yet to win a game this season when their opponent tallies a score in the opening inning (0-9) ... ECU is also only 1-10 when its opponent crosses home first ... East Carolina is a perfect 8-0 though when holding opponents to two runs or less.

Scouting Syracuse
Syracuse (5-10) had last weekend off, but started its week on Monday with a 4-1 loss to No. 20/23 Hawai'i ... Lindsay Taylor struck out seven in the loss to the Rainbow Wahine ... Syracuse has lost four straight games and seven of the last eight contests ... Of the seven loss in that span though, four have come to teams that were ranked ... Veronica Grant has been the top hitter for the program with five home runs and 12 RBI ... Corinne Ozanne leads the squad with her .306 batting average ... She is also second on the team with nine RBI and tied for the lead with seven walks ... Stacy Kuwik has been the top pitcher with her four wins and four complete games ... Taylor is 1-7 but has thrown a team-high 53.1 inning and leads the team with her 51 strikeouts ... The Orange are picked to place fifth in the BIG EAST this season and were one of five schools in the conference to make the NCAA Tournament in 2012 ... The team is coached by Leigh Ross ... Ross is 434-347 in her career ... She has served as the head coach of the program since 2007 and has led the program to 30 plus wins in each of the last four seasons, including 45 wins in 2011 and 43 wins in 2012 ... The Pirates lead the all-time series with Syracuse 1-0 and defeated the Orange by a 4-3 margin during the 2008 Pirate Clash.

Scouting No. 20/23 Hawai'i
The No. 20/23 Rainbow Wahine (17-5) defeated Syracuse on Monday and have won six in a row and nine of the last 10 games ... Kelly Majam leads the offensive attack with her .354 batting average, 23 hits, seven home runs and 13 RBI ... Keiki Carlos is hitting .322 with 19 hits, eight doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI ... Leisha Li'ili'i sports a .309 average, three home runs and 16 RBI ... The Rainbow Wahine have six players on the roster with 10 or more RBI on the season ... The pitching staff is led by Kaia Parnaby, who is 15-2 with a 1.23 ERA plus 153 strikeouts in 119.2 innings thrown ... Hawai'i have made the NCAA Tournament a total of 10 times in their softball history and advanced all the way to the College World Series in 2010 ... Hawai'i is coached by Bob Coolen, who is in his 24th season leading the program, and has accumulated a record of 814-460-1 in his career ...The Pirates have only faced Hawai'i three times including this year's meeting last weekend ... The Rainbow Wahine have outscored ECU 24-4 in those three games.

Up Next
East Carolina, after an extended stay on the islands, returns to the mainland and travels to Birmingham, Ala. to take on UAB (11-5, 3-0 C-USA) to open league play ... The Pirates have a doubleheader against the Blazers on March 16 starting at 2 p.m. (ET) and then will take on UAB in a television game on March 17 at noon (ET).

Pirates Split Extra-Inning Affairs At Classic
The East Carolina softball team opened Pirate Classic action with a split at a rain-soaked ECU Softball Field on Saturday. The Pirates took out Syracuse 4-3 in eight innings while a late rally against Purdue fell just short in a 3-2 eight-inning affair.

East Carolina's softball team (8-13) was shutout in a run-shortened contest for the second straight game in falling to No. 21/24 Hawai'i (16-5) an 8-0 score on Saturday, March 9, in the second day of the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
