GREENVILLE, N.C. – After winning its first two Conference USA series’, East Carolina will host Marshall when the two schools open a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader at 4 p.m., on Friday, March 21 at the ECU Softball Stadium.
East Carolina (15-8, 4-2 C-USA) enters the series following an extended rest, after taking two out of three games at Charlotte in league action last weekend. The Pirates own a 7-4 record in March and possess a 10-1 mark when scoring at least six runs.
Against the 49ers last weekend, junior Caroline Umphlett earned the save with two shutout innings to close out game one of the series, before pitching 4.2 innings of relief in the second contest to pick up her third win of the season.
Senior Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin is riding a team-best and career-long nine-game reached base streak, while hitting at a .353 clip during that span. The Waianae, Hawai’i native has the most three-hit games on the team with four this season.
ECU owns a 16-15 edge over the Thundering Herd in the all-time series, and has won five of the last seven matchups. The Pirates swept the regular-season series in Huntington, W. Va., last season, but Marshall ousted East Carolina from the C-USA tournament in the first round.
The Herd is led by Kaelynn Greene’s .415 batting average, as she also ranks first on the team in hits (34) and runs (17). Shaelynn Braxton is hitting at a .310 clip, has scored 16 runs and leads Marshall in home runs (6) and RBI (17).
