GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team will embark on its first non-conference road games of the season when it makes the short trip to Chapel Hill for a mid-week doubleheader at North Carolina on Wednesday, March 26. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m., at Anderson Stadium.
The pair of games will go down as the 85th and 86th times ECU and UNC have faced off on the softball diamond, but just the first time the teams have met for a doubleheader in Chapel Hill since the 2008 season. Wednesday’s matchup will mark the third straight year the two programs meet.
Despite dropping a Conference USA doubleheader to Marshall last Friday, East Carolina (16-10, 5-4 C-USA) bounced back for a 9-1 run-rule victory in six innings over the Thundering Herd in Saturday’s finale.
Possessing a 3-3 record in its last six games, junior Caroline Umphlett has stepped up in the circle for the Pirates with a 2-1 record and one save to complement a 3.05 ERA. The Elizabeth City, N.C., native has surrendered just 15 hits in 18.1 innings to go with 12 strikeouts, while holding the opposition to a .217 batting average.
North Carolina (16-12, 9-2 ACC) has won five of its last six games entering its matchup with ECU. Aquilla Mateen leads the Tar Heels with a .402 batting average and 10 stolen bases and ranks second on the team in runs with 22. Jenna Kelly and Kristen Brown are tied for the team lead in home runs with eight apiece, while Lori Spingola is UNC’s top pitcher with an 11-7 record and 2.95 ERA.
