GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina will return to league play when it makes its second Conference USA road trip of the season, as it heads to Miami, Fla., to take on FIU in a three-game series. Play will begin Saturday, March 29 with a doubleheader at 4 p.m., before a single-game series finale at noon Sunday.
The Pirates and Panthers have never met as conference foes, but faced off in a pair of games at the Buzz Classic in Atlanta, Ga., during the 2000 season, where ECU defeated FIU, 8-0 and 7-2.
East Carolina (16-10, 5-4 C-USA) enters the weekend hitting .300 as a team which ranks fourth in the conference, while its 48 stolen bases are the third most in the league. FIU (20-12, 3-3 C-USA) is hitting .286 – the sixth best in Conference USA – and is tied for the fourth most steals.
First baseman Jordan Lewis (five) and corner infielder Alex Fieldhouse (six) are tied for the seventh most home runs in program history with 19-career big flies. The senior sluggers, who generally hit fifth and sixth in the batting order, sit just one homer behind Mandi Nichols (2002-05) on the all-time list.
FIU is led by Stephanie Texeira, who is hitting .409 and tops all players on the team in hits (38) and RBI (24), while sitting in a tie for the team lead in home runs (5). Corinne Jenkins has been the Panthers' top pitcher thus far, posting an 11-4 record and a 2.48 ERA in 18 starts this season.
