EL PASO, Texas - The East Carolina softball team gets back into conference play and travels to Texas to take on UTEP this weekend. ECU starts the action with a doubleheader against the Miners beginning at 4 p.m. (ET) on Friday before completing the series with a single contest starting at 2 p.m. (ET) on Saturday. The Pirates enter the weekend with an overall record of 10-21 and are 1-5 in Conference USA play.

UTEP (12-16, 1-4 Conference USA) is in the middle of a busy week of action with six home games at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex ... UTEP took two-of-three games from Siena in the midweek and are scheduled to play against ECU for three conference games this weekend ... The Miners split their two conference games last weekend in Hattiesburg, Miss. to Southern Miss ... Kawehiokalani Netane leads the team in batting average at .357 ... She is also tied for the team lead with 19 runs ... Erika Acuri is hitting .349 batting average with 19 runs and 11 walks ... Alanna Leasau is the top power hitter with team-high of six home runs and 28 RBI ... Kayla Oranger has recorded 33 hits on the season, while batting .330 and stealing nine bases ... Danielle Pearson is the workhorse of the staff with six wins and 89.1 innings worked ... Colleen Hohman has been the other primary pitcher with 58.2 innings worked and a team-high 51 strikeouts ... UTEP is coached by the husband and wife team of James and Kathleen Rodriguez ... The Rodriguez coaching duo are in their 10th season of running the program and are the only softball coaches in the history of UTEP ... At UTEP, the husband and wife coaching team have an all-time record of 209-304-2 and 53-155-4 in Conference USA-only play since starting the program ... East Carolina leads the all-time series with UTEP by a count of 18-4 and are on a streak of having won nine of the last 10 games and 13 of the 14 in the series.

The three-game sweep by Houston over East Carolina (3/23-24) was only the 15th time that the Pirates have been swept in a conference series since joining Conference USA in 2002 ... After the team went 251 at-bats and over three weeks between home runs hit - Jordan Lewis
versus North Carolina (3/1) and Lewis against Houston (3/23) - it only took the Pirates a mere 62 at-bats to hit another home run on Jasmine Robbins' two-run shot in the fourth inning in the series finale against the Cougars (3/24) ... The home run was also Robbins' first extra-base hit of the season ... The Pirates hit two more home runs in the series against North Carolina State in only 52 at-bats on March 27 ... Freshman Kelsi Briggs
made it only 16 at-bats between home runs when she hit a three-run home run against North Carolina State (3/27) in the first inning of the first game of the doubleheader against the Wolfpack ... Junior Alex Fieldhouse
homered only six at-bats later in the game to give the Pirates four home runs in the last 84 at-bats.
Turning It Around
After a rough stretch of three starts in the middle of the season (0-3 record, 7.41 ERA in 11.1 innings pitched), sophomore Sarah Christian has really begun to settle down in her last six starts ... Despite the 2-3 overall record, she sports a fine 1.65 ERA and has fanned 18 in her 34 innings in the circle.
Jordan Lewis is 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts this season and has only been thrown out twice in 29 career attempts on the base paths.
Individual Conference Leaders
The Pirates, through the midway points of the eighth week of softball action, have several players that are ranked highly in Conference USA ... Junior Kristi Oshiro leads the conference in triples (5) and is tied for the league lead in doubles (10) ... She is second in batting average (.380), third in total bases (58) and slugging percentage (.630), tied for third in runs scored (24), fifth in hits (35) plus tied for eighth in both sacrifice bunts (3), being hit by a pitch (3) and on-baser percentage (.442) ... Junior Alex Fieldhouse is tied for second in sacrifice flies (2) plus fifth in slugging percentage (.618 and total bases (55) ... She is also tied for fifth in home runs (6) and in triples (2) plus seventh in RBI (21) ... Junior Jordan Lewis is second in on-base percentage (.458), tied fifth in triples (2), tied for sixth in walks and eighth in stolen bases (10) ... Junior Jill Jelnick is tied for fifth in triples (2) ... Freshman Casey Alcorn is tied for 10th in triples (1) ... Sophomore Sarah Christian is third in appearances (23), fourth in innings pitched (106.2) and games started (16)... Christian is sixth in wins (7) and tied for seventh in games in relief (7).

ECU, as a team, is tied for the conference lead in triples (12) and are tied for third in doubles (38) ... The program is also fourth in total bases (304), fifth in home runs (16), sixth in batting average (.248) and slugging percentage (.389).
Kristi Oshiro ranks among the NCAA leaders in several categories in the second release of statistics this week (3/17) ... Oshiro is fourth in triples (5.0), 10th in triples per game (0.17), 25th in toughest to strikeout (28.7), 64th in doubles per game (0.31) and116th in batting average (.395) ... Alex Fieldhouse also finds herself among the NCAA leaders in triples (2.0 - 70th) ... Jordan Lewis is 70th nationally in triples (2.0) ... In the circle, Sarah Christian is 86th in walks per seven innings (1.84).
Need To Keep Them Scoreless in the First
The Pirates have yet to win a game this season when their opponent tallies a score in the opening inning (0-13 record) ... ECU is also only 1-18 when its opponent crosses home first ... East Carolina is 10-2 on the season though when holding opponents to two runs or less in any game.
East Carolina returns home and hosts UNC Wilmington (10-16) on Wednesday, April 3, for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. at ECU Softball Stadium.
