GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina softball team returns home to host a non-conference doubleheader against state-rival UNC Wilmington on Wednesday starting at 4 p.m. The Pirates enter the week with an overall record of 13-21 and are riding a three-game winning-streak

Scouting UNC Wilmington
UNC Wilmington (11-18) dropped two-of-three games over the weekend to George Mason ... Olivia Poplin had six hits and three RBI in the three games against the Patriots to pace the squad ... KC Shue put up three hits and three RBI in the final contest on Sunday ... Poplin leads the team with her .322 batting average and 13 walks ... Lauryn Buckworth has totaled team-highs of 26 hits and seven doubles ... Shue is the squad leader with 17 RBI ... Casey Rowland is the team's primary pitcher and leads the team in wins (7), ERA (3.70), complete games (8), shutouts (1), innings pitched (89.0) and strikeouts (76) ... Jordyn Schmidt has been the other primary pitcher with 64 innings worked and 41 strikeouts ... The Seahawks have played four games against ranked opponents this season with two games against both Florida and Tennessee in pre-conference tournaments... UNCW is coached by Kristy Norton ... Norton is in her first year with the program after spending the last seven years as an assistant coach at James Madison ...The Seahawks are the most frequently played opponent in ECU softball history as the teams have played 92 games in a rivalry that dates back to the 1985 season ... The Seahawks and Pirates have met at least twice every season since then with the ECU holding a 78-14 advantage in the all-time series ... East Carolina is currently on a streak of having won 21 of the last 23 meeting since the start of the 2004 season.

Career Numbers vs. UNC Wilmington
Junior Jill Jelnick has hit well against the Seahawks with a .500 career batting average (5-for-10), four runs scored, five RBI and four stolen bases in as many attempts ... Fellow junior Kristi Oshiro has a career batting average of .429 (6-for-14), four runs scored, a double, a triple and two walks ... Junior Jasmine Robbins is hitting .444 (4-for-9) with four runs scored, two RBI, two walks and she has been hit by four pitches by the UNCW pitchers ... Both ECU pitchers are undefeated all-time against UNC Wilmington ... Sophomore Sarah Christian is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and only allowed three hits against UNCW in her one career appearance last season ... Her sophomore teammate, Courtney Smith, appeared in both games last season and went 1-0 in her eight innings in the circle.

On This Date
ECU has an all-time record of 6-7 on the date of April 3 ... Among the two wins are a pair of forfeit victories over Elizabeth City State during the 1993 season ... ECU last played on the date in 2011 when the team took on Southern Miss.

Last Time Out
The Pirates swept a conference set from UTEP over the weekend (March 29-30) ... ECU needed to come from behind in the first game and rallied from a 3-1 deficit by scoring a combined eight runs in the fifth and the sixth innings for a 9-4 victory ... Alex Fieldhouse had three hits and five RBI in the win ... The Pirates won the second game by a 9-0 score ... Six different ECU players, led by Jill Jelnick and Kai Clark's two RBI, drove in at least a run in the game ... Courtney Smith threw her second shutout of the season to earn the victory ... East Carolina kept the momentum going with an 8-0 victory in the series finale on Saturday afternoon ... Kristi Oshiro produced three hits, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the offensive charge ... Sarah Christian threw her first shutout of the season and earned her 10th win of the year.

Fieldhouse Named C-USA Hitter-Of-The-Week
Junior third baseman Alex Fieldhouse was selected as the Conference USA Hitter-of-the-Week on Monday, April 1 ... The selection is the first of Fieldhouse's career and the initial league honor for a Pirate this season ... She hit .412 (7-for-17) in the team's five games from March 27-March 30 ... She also totaled four runs scored, four doubles, nine RBI, 14 total bases, a .874 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .421 ... Five of her seven hits went for extra bases and she produced five two-out RBI on the week.

Scoreless Inning Streak
The Pirate pitching staff threw back-to-back shutout in the last two games of the UTEP series (3/29-30) and have a 12-inning scoreless inning streak heading to this week ... The last time the Pirates threw consecutive shutouts was also against UTEP during the 2011 season.

Leaving Nothing To Chance
Sophomore Courtney Smith has a pair of wins on the season with both coming when she threw complete-game shutouts of the opposition (North Dakota - 3/3 and UTEP - 3/29).


 

 

Turning It Around
After a rough stretch of three starts in the middle of the season (0-3 record, 7.41 ERA in 11.1 innings pitched), sophomore Sarah Christian has really begun to settle down in her last eight starts ... Despite the 4-3 overall record, she sports a fine 1.79 ERA and has fanned 28 in her 47 innings in the circle.

On A Streak
After getting on base safety in each game over the weekend with at least a hit and walk in every game against UTEP (3/29-30), Jordan Lewis has reached base safely in 26 of the team's last 29 games ... Lewis, in that time, is hitting .347 (26-for-75) with an on-base percentage of .479 ... She also has reached base safely in each of her last 10 games.

Sneaky Fast
Jordan Lewis is 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts this season and has only been thrown out twice in 30 career attempts on the base paths.

Individual Conference Leaders
The Pirates, through the eighth week of softball action, have several players that are ranked highly in Conference USA ...  Junior Kristi Oshiro leads the conference in triples (5) ... She is second in league in batting average (.400) and on-base percentage (.479), tied for second in doubles (10), third in hits (40) and runs scored (29), tied for third in total bases (68), fifth in slugging percentage (.630) plus tied for ninth in sacrifice bunts (4) and hit by pitch (3) ... Junior Alex Fieldhouse is tied for the league lead in sacrifice flies (3) ... She is second in RBI (29), tied for second in doubles (10), tied for third in total bases (68), fourth in slugging percentage (636), tied for fifth in triples (2) and tied for sixth in home runs (6) ...  Junior Jordan Lewis is third in walks (19), fourth in on-base percentage (.472), tied for fifth in triples (2), seventh in batting average (.352) and eighth in stolen bases (11) ... Junior Jill Jelnick is tied for third in sacrifice flies (2) and ranks tied for fifth in triples (2) ... Freshman Kelsi Briggs is tied for third in sacrifice flies (2) ... Sophomore Sarah Christian is third in appearances (25), fourth in innings pitched (119.2) and games started (18)... Christian is fifth in wins (10) and tied for 10th in games in relief (7).

East Carolina used 17 runs during its Wednesday doubleheader to top UNC Wilmington 10-2 in six innings and 7-1. The Pirates (15-17) tallied 15 hits, but buoyed their offense with 15 stolen bases and nine errors by the Seahawks (6-26).

ECU, as a team, is tied for the conference lead in triples (12) and are third in doubles (43) and total bases (345) ... The program is also tied for fourth in home runs (18) plus fifth in runs (129), slugging percentage (.400) and hits (224)

NCAA Leaders
Kristi Oshiro ranks among the NCAA leaders in several categories in the third release of statistics this week (3/31) ... Oshiro is fifth in triples (5.0), 13th in triples per game (0.15), 38th in toughest to strikeout (25.0), 69th in doubles per game (0.29), 87th in batting average (.400), 122nd in on-base percentage (.479) ... Alex Fieldhouse also finds herself among the NCAA leaders in sacrifice flies (3.0 - 15th) ... She is also 69th in doubles per game (0.29), 90th in triples (2.0) and 132nd in RBI per game (0.85) ... Jordan Lewis is 90th nationally in triples per game (2.0), 136th in walks (0.56) and 145th in on-base percentage (.472) ... In the circle, Sarah Christian is 88th in walks per seven innings (1.93) and 100th in wins (10.0) ... Courtney Smith ranks 119th in shutouts nationally (2.0)

Need To Keep Them Scoreless in the First
Against UTEP (3/29), the Pirates picked up their first win of the season when the opponent scores in the opening inning and are now 1-13 when that happens this year ... ECU is also 1-18 when its opponent crosses home first ... East Carolina is 12-2 on the season though when holding opponents to two runs or less in any game and 8-4 themselves when the scoring in the first frame.

Home Sweet Home
ECU has a 7-11 record in home games this season ... Junior Kristi Oshiro has led the team with her .389 batting average (21-for-54), seven doubles and four triples ... Fellow junior Alex Fieldhouse has also stood out at home with her .314 batting average (16-for-51) with four home runs and 14 RBI ... Sophomore Sarah Christian has six of the team's wins with a 2.82 ERA in 59.2 innings thrown ... ECU has a team batting average of .268 at home and a team ERA of 3.50.
