Softball Posts Two Wins During Round Robin Play At Longwood Invitational

FARMVILLE, Va. --- After dropping its tournament opener to UNC Wilmington, 11-2, East Carolina posted a pair of shut out victories at the Longwood Invitational on Saturday. The Pirates blanked Longwood College, 7-0, and then shut out Radford, 3-0.

With its performance on Saturday, East Carolina improved its overall record to 45-13.

In its game against Longwood, Keli Harrell (21-10) earn the victory by tossing a complete game, two-hit shut out with nine strikeouts. Freshman Laurel Carlson led the offensive charge with three hits, while senior Mandi Nichols collected two hits. Fellow senior Leigh Savoy also registered two hits, including a leadoff home run. The Pirates pounded out 10 hits and recorded five RBI.

The Pirates' game against Radford remained scoreless until the seventh inning. Junior Krista Jessup drove in the game-winning run with a one-out single after senior Kate Manuse and Carlson each singled to begin the frame. Junior Alison Monce then reached on a fielder's choice while driving in the second run, as did Savoy to plate the final run of the game.

Junior Stephanie Hayes (11-1) earned the victory over the Highlanders by tossing a complete game four-hit shut out.

During the tournament opener against UNC Wilmington, six players collected a hit for ECU,, while the Seahawks tallied 12 hits. UNCW erupted for seven runs in third inning after scoring three in the first and the game was called after five innings.

ECU continues play at the Longwood Invitational on Sunday in the championship round.
