GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team received the No. 6 seed for the 2014 Conference USA Softball Championship and will face third-seeded FIU in the tournament’s first round on Thursday, May 8 at 1:30 p.m., in Boca Raton, Fla.
ECU (27-19, 14-10 C-USA) and FIU (33-19, 15-9 C-USA) are familiar opponents after the Panthers took two of three games during the regular season series in Miami, Fla., March 29-30. The Pirates fell, 11-9, in a game-one slugfest, before dropping the second contest, 2-0, but rebounded with a 12-2 run-rule victory in five innings in the finale.
East Carolina owns a 4-3 record in games played in the state of Florida in 2014, after going 3-1 at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in February. It has won two of the last four conference tournaments, including back-to-back crowns in 2010 and 2011.
Seven members of ECU’s 2011 championship team are on this year’s roster, including seniors Alex Fieldhouse, Jill Jelnick, Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackiin, Jordan Lewis, Kristi Oshiro, Jasmine Robbins and redshirt junior Abby Wynne.
Thursday’s first round and Friday’s semifinal can be viewed by All-Access members, while Saturday’s championship will be aired on CBS Sports Network at 12 noon.
